Political rhetoric, particularly around the election cycle seems to be heating up and one of the major issues being targeted is immigration. In order to give us a better idea of how damaging this rhetoric is, we are being joined by Agelica Rubio. Angelica is the Executive Director for Center for Advocacy Rights and Engagement, a non-profit organization in rural New Mexico, dedicated to engaging community residents in policies and actions affecting their communities. Ms. Rubio is also a blogger at www.rubiodispatch.com and a freelance writer.

Ms. Rubio wrote an article for NACLA that can be found here

Afghan War from the Pacifist Perspective

Discussions about Afghanistan have discussed many military solutions, however little attention is given to dis… cussions for non military solutions. In order to grant insight on this subject, we had a chance to talk to Dr. Hakim. Hakim is a peace activist and medical doctor, originally from Singapore, who came to Afghanistan about a decade ago to work in the refugee camps there. The Afghan people gave him the name “Hakim,” a term of endearment which means “wise person” and physician. He is mentor to and translator for the Afghan Peace Volunteers.

A March to Question Nato’s Role in Afghanistan

The Afghanistan conflict has been a major sticking point in US foreign policy and by the most recent projections, we can be stuck there for at least another 10 years trying to build up the country. In an effort to bring the debate about our involvement in Afghanistan to the national level, we are being joined by Buddy Bell. He has been involved in Voices’ campaigns in the United States for 7 years. In 2009, he helped set up one of the first ever drone protests outside Creech Air Force Base Nevada. He has worked full-time at Voices since this January, organizing the 200-mile walk to speak out for an end to NATO’s war in Afghanistan and NATO drones

Tracking the Global Jobs Recovery

We have been living in the largest recession since the Great Depression and by the looks of it, even the recovery will take some time. At core of the global recovery is the need to stimulate the global job market and in an effort to better understand how to do this in on a global scale we are joined by Marva Corley, Senior economist at the International Institute for Labour Studies at the International Labour Office and one of the authors of the recently published World of Work Report 2012: Better Jobs for a Better Economy. This interview was originally aired on Hofstra’s Morning Wake Up Call Thursday edition which can be heard from 7 until 9am EST

Thanks to this video, I watched so many Richard Feynman and Carl Sagan videos last night. SO. MANY.

And did I cry watching pretty much all of them? Absolutely.

As a result of this there has increasingly been a push to develop international climate legislation to prevent further climate disasters. We were joined by Christiana Figueres the Executive Secretary for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change who provides insight into the formation of international climate legislation as well as specifics about mechanisms to fight climate change

Fact check: "Kony's War in Uganda"

Fact check: “Kony’s War in Uganda” Cover the Night (Make Kony Famous 2012) Worldwide
1) Kony is not in Uganda (the Kony 2012 video did not make this clear)
2) The LRA is only calculated as a couple 100 people, the majority of armed violence comes from other warring factions. Even with the removal of Kony there is still the potential of the LRA people resorting to joining other armed groups.
3) Most crucial problem that needs to be addressed is a crisis of governance that has forced many people to form their own private militias

More Fact checks can be found here: http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2012/03/07/guest_post_joseph_kony_is_not_in_uganda_and_other_complicated_things

and a strategic overview of US role in LRA conflict can be found here:
http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/136673/mareike-schomerus-tim-allen-and-koen-vlassenroot/obama-takes-on-the-lra

I will say that bringing Kony to justice at the ICC should be a global goal, however I am simply curious about what would be the most adequate action. Efforts directed towards more troops in Africa? Directing troops to protect civilians first and foremost? Encouraging local governments to allow more participation of their citizens? Full of questions and looking for answers.

As always, eager for more input and discussion about this topic.

In an effort to stave off climate change while fighting off the...

In an effort to stave off climate change while fighting off the recession, environmental investment has been understood as one of the more beneficial investments. In this spirit Transmission Developer…s Inc. has launched the Hudson Power Express Route which will connect urban life such as New York City and Toronto to the renewable energy production in remote areas, reducing transportation costs and increasing renewable energy access. In order to draw attention to the real problem of Long Island Segregation Save Our Sons organized two days of panels to discuss segregation in Long Island education.
